Abstract

This critical edition of Marie de Bretagne's Hotel Account (National Archives, KK 241) pays tribute not only to the expertise of Michael Jones as a prolific editor of archival material relating to the Breton ducal family, but also to his fundamental research on the duchy at the end of the Middle Ages, on aristocratic lifestyles and on administrative documentary practices. Marie's account, which extends from July 13, 1365 to March 7, 1366, is timely to provide insight into the consequences of the defeat of her parents, Charles de Blois and Jeanne de Penthièvre, Duke and Duchess of Brittany, in the War of Succession. For example, Mary took in her younger brother while their mother attended to business elsewhere, and commissioned a mass for her father's soul. More generally, this account gives detailed information on the material, organizational and logistical aspects of a princess's household. It is divided into four sections: money received, daily expenses, extraordinary expenses and provisions in kind. These elements allow us to reconstruct Marie's usual itinerary in Anjou and on a long trip to Languedoc (where her husband was the royal lieutenant), the relationships within and outside her entourage, and the consumption of luxury in terms of concerns food, clothing, patronage. A final aspect of the interest of this account lies in its particular composition: the original registers having been destroyed during the siege of Vaas in 1370, the ducal accountant established this replacement in 1376, carefully noting where he got his information.
