Critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos: a review (2021)
Journal Article
Powell, E. (2021). Critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos: a review. Markov processes and related fields, 27(4), 557-606

This review-style article presents an overview of recent progress in constructing and studying critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos. A proof that the critical measure in any dimension can be obtained as a limit of subcritical measures is given.

Accelerating Convergence of Replica Exchange Stochastic Gradient MCMC via Variance Reduction (2021)
Presentation / Conference
Deng, W., Feng, Q., Karagiannis, G., Lin, G., & Liang, F. (2021, December). Accelerating Convergence of Replica Exchange Stochastic Gradient MCMC via Variance Reduction. Paper presented at International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR'21), Virtual Event

Replica exchange stochastic gradient Langevin dynamics (reSGLD) has shown promise in accelerating the convergence in non-convex learning; however, an excessively large correction for avoiding biases from noisy energy estimators has limited the potent... Reflecting random walks in curvilinear wedges (2021)
Book Chapter
Menshikov, M. V., Mijatović, A., & Wade, A. R. (2021). Reflecting random walks in curvilinear wedges. In M. Vares, R. Fernández, L. Fontes, & C. Newman (Eds.), In and out of equilibrium 3: celebrating Vladas Sidoarvicius (637-675). Springer Verlag. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-60754-8_26

We study a random walk (Markov chain) in an unbounded planar domain bounded by two curves of the form x2=a+xβ+1 and x2=−a−xβ−1 , with x1 ≥ 0. In the interior of the domain, the random walk has zero drift and a given increment covariance matrix. From... Read More about Reflecting random walks in curvilinear wedges.

Random Unitary Representations of Surface Groups I: Asymptotic expansions (2021)
Journal Article
Magee, M. (2022). Random Unitary Representations of Surface Groups I: Asymptotic expansions. Communications in Mathematical Physics, 391(1), 119-171. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00220-021-04295-5

In this paper, we study random representations of fundamental groups of surfaces into special unitary groups. The random model we use is based on a symplectic form on moduli space due to Atiyah, Bott and Goldman. Let Σg denote a topological surface o... Local geometry of the rough-smooth interface in the two-periodic Aztec diamond (2021)
Journal Article
Beffara, V., Chhita, S., & Johansson, K. (2022). Local geometry of the rough-smooth interface in the two-periodic Aztec diamond. Annals of Applied Probability, 32(2), 974-1017. https://doi.org/10.1214/21-aap1701

Random tilings of the two-periodic Aztec diamond contain three macroscopic regions: frozen, where the tilings are deterministic; rough, where the correlations between dominoes decay polynomially; smooth, where the correlations between dominoes decay... Interference-free walks in time: temporally disjoint paths (2021)
Conference Proceeding
Klobas, N., Mertzios, G., Molter, H., Niedermeier, R., & Zschoche, P. (2021). Interference-free walks in time: temporally disjoint paths. . https://doi.org/10.24963/ijcai.2021/563

We investigate the computational complexity of finding temporally disjoint paths or walks in temporal graphs. There, the edge set changes over discrete time steps and a temporal path (resp. walk) uses edges that appear at monotonically increasing tim... Objectives To evaluate the asymptomatic coronavirus testing programme at Durham University by exploring students’ barriers and facilitators to taking part and provide recommendations to improve the programme. Design Qualitative interviews. Setting On... Read More about Durham University students’ experiences of asymptomatic COVID-19 testing: a qualitative study.

Calculating the Higgs mass in string theory (2021)
Journal Article
Abel, S., & Dienes, K. R. (2021). Calculating the Higgs mass in string theory. Physical Review D, 104(12), https://doi.org/10.1103/physrevd.104.126032

In this paper, we establish a fully string-theoretic framework for calculating one-loop Higgs masses directly from first principles in perturbative closed-string theories. Our framework makes no assumptions other than world sheet modular invariance a... Read More about Calculating the Higgs mass in string theory.

Gauged 2-form symmetries in 6D SCFTs coupled to gravity (2021)
Journal Article
Braun, A. P., Larfors, M., & Oehlmann, P. (2021). Gauged 2-form symmetries in 6D SCFTs coupled to gravity. Journal of High Energy Physics, 2021(12), Article 132. https://doi.org/10.1007/jhep12%282021%29132

We study six dimensional supergravity theories with superconformal sectors (SCFTs). Instances of such theories can be engineered using type IIB strings, or more generally F-Theory, which translates field theoretic constraints to geometry. Specificall... Spatially Separated Electron and Proton Beams in a Simulated Solar Coronal Jet (2021)
Journal Article
Pallister, R., Wyper, P. F., Pontin, D. I., DeVore, C. R., & Chiti, F. (2021). Spatially Separated Electron and Proton Beams in a Simulated Solar Coronal Jet. Astrophysical Journal, 923(2), Article 163. https://doi.org/10.3847/1538-4357/ac2e6d

Magnetic reconnection is widely accepted to be a major contributor to nonthermal particle acceleration in the solar atmosphere. In this paper we investigate particle acceleration during the impulsive phase of a coronal jet, which involves bursty reco...
