Abstract

School is a long-term intervention in children’s lives. Children spend many hours in school where the
expectation is that the activities will boost their natural growth and academic potential in the most receptive
years of development. However, learning a combination of cognitive and noncognitive skills is also a natural
process. In this symposium, we will discuss four studies assessing the impact of early years of schooling in
Brazil, Pakistan and India. These studies are natural experiments conducted in the same years. Disruption in
school attendance due to Covid-19 and non-enrolments form unique, large-scale and natural comparisons. The
papers will discuss what school means for the learning of children in general and more so from a
disadvantaged background. This symposium will focus on the following points:
1. The role of preschool in children’s early learning and development
2. School matters for social emotional development of children
3. Delay and disruption in cognitive learning lead to learning loss
