Abstract

This article offers an overview of the contemporary novelist Toni Morrison's literary career and of the critical response to her fiction. It also considers recent shifts in American and African American studies that allow for intersections with postcolonial studies and transatlanticist approaches. Finally, questions are raised regarding future directions in our reading of black U.S. literature.
