Introduction: Learning Lessons Across Borders

Abstract

Homelessness is a global challenge that warrants a global perspective. Yet homelessness also presents a global opportunity – to learn lessons across borders and to innovate and inspire new thinking and novel ways of ‘seeing’ homelessness from a genuinely international perspective. This collection draws on the diverse, rich tapestry of experiences of homelessness and homelessness prevention across 28 different nations from each of the permanently inhabited continents and seeks to nourish and inform debates both at the state and international level as well as within global institutions on how best to respond to and tackle this most damaging global social phenomenon and human tragedy. While every nation on Earth has its own history and socio-political landscape, the fundamental need of citizens for secure and stable housing speaks in a universal language. This core human imperative for a safe place to call ‘home’ is shared by all populations and is one that sounds across history and transcends country lines.
