Abstract

This article examines the information contained in the extant account books of Molière’s troupe, the Hôtel Guénégaud company and the Comédie-Française with regard to their production policies in the matter of costume, considering such factors as how they were obtained, from whom and for whom, and where they fitted into the production process as a whole. The level of expenditure and attention to detail underlines the important contribution made by dress to the opulence of the stage picture.
