In 2021, both the UK CMA and the EU DG COMP articulated a set of public policy objectives to advance sustainability and contribute to the green economy. The international scope of sustainability is wider than that of the green economy to include competition, inequality, and poverty. Nevertheless, the recent pronouncements signal a welcome paradigm shift from a sole focus on consumer welfare as the norm for material prosperity through lower prices and quality towards greater environmental wellbeing of consumers in the public interest. The latter captures an economically sustainable dimension of environmental consumer protection from the huge industrial damages of waste and pollution.
