Biography Nick is a former Royal Society University Research Fellow and Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. A geologist by training, with a DSc from the University of Liverpool, Nick has worked in industry and on academic and commercial research projects throughout the world. He has held visiting research appointments at the Universities of Michigan, Macquarie (Australia) Vermont and NASA . Nick is currently visiting professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, Durham University, and an Associate Fellow of Durham Energy Institute. Nick has extensive experience serving on professional bodies at Board level. He a former University Vice Chancellor (Northampton), Chair of Northamptonshire Health and Wellbeing Board, former Board member of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association, and The Leadership Foundation, Trustee at Unltd, the foundation for social entrepreneurs, Silverstone UTC and Chaired Procurement UK on behalf of UUK. He has been an occasional science broadcaster and has appeared in documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, National Geographic and The Weather Channel. Contributions include Krakatoa Revealed (2006), The Volcano That Stopped the World (2010), The Birth of Britain (2011), The Birth of Europe (2012), Top Ten Natural Disasters (2014) and for WAGTV What on Earth (2016).
He is currently working as a consultant to the renewable energy sector, drawing on earlier training as a refrigeration engineer.
Research Interests Working as a consultant for domestic and light commercial air source heat pump importer and installer, collecting data on domestic energy usage. Researcher in Department of Earth Sciences with interest in magmatic processes, volcanic ash hazards in domestic settings and impact on EU Building Codes. Topics relevant to DEI include fluid mechanics, heat loss and potential sources of geothermal energy.
