Biography After taking a degree from Durham University in Biology, Physics and Education, I worked as a teacher in schools in the North East of England. Following a Masters’ degree in Education was an Advisory Teacher for Science and Technology, working for a local authority in North East schools.

This was followed by a move to the Newcastle University as a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer in Science Education. While there I completed my PhD into Teaching for Understanding in Science.

A move to Durham University brought leadership of a (then) new BScEd degree in Science Education, promotion to a Chair in Education and two spells as Head of School – 2005 to 2010 then 2017 to 2024.

During this period I have published over 100 papers, 20+ books and numerous research reports. My research for the last two decades has been into purposeful product thought – its various elements, particularly creative thinking and problem solving.
