Keay, Simon James (1954–2021), archaeologist, was born on 21 May 1954 at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, the second of three sons of Anthony David James Keay (1919–1993), structural engineer, and his New Zealand-born, Australian-raised wife, Lorelei Deirdre, née Shiel (1928–2012), who had married in Brisbane in 1951. At the time of his birth the family lived at Flat 3, 5 Onslow Square, South Kensington, London.
