Abstract

The manuscripts attributed to Matthew Paris (c. 1200-1259) contain chronicles, hagiographies, maps, drawings, heraldry and astrology, and some of these are well known, like the Chronica Majora or the Vie de Seint Auban. In this paper, a multi-methodological approach is proposed for the study of scribal idiosyncrasy and the ageing of Paris’s script. This approach has yielded some results in redefining Paris’s hand, producing a chronology of his manuscripts based on changes to the script; and in describing the hands of collaborating scribes present throughout a select corpus. This multi-methodological approach encompasses the palaeographical analysis of the script, in order to produce a new, more complete description, and to trace changes in the hand throughout the manuscripts; the use of Archetype to annotate palaeographical features in all manuscripts in the corpus simultaneously and in context; and quantitative methods to work and interpret large amounts of data.
