Abstract

The UNIX modular operating system is popular within universities because it is largely portable between different computing systems. This text shows how the features of the system can be used to help computer programming. The first part of the book is a 'user guide' at a very basic level to UNIX, which is now a leading operating system for minicomputers and the larger microcomputers. The system is introduced through a gradual logical progression, using straightforward examples. The 2nd and 3rd parts deal at a more advanced level with the use of UNIX by programmers and gives a basis for sound software engineering practices. The text is based on UNIX(V7) and its implementation upon the PDP-11 family of processors; most of the material is applicable to any processor, and almost any related system. -from Author
