Abstract
This chapter focuses on some of the key convictions and fundamental commitments which have been at work in Receptive Ecumenism from the outset and to which we need to keep returning. It starts out by reflecting on the refrain that runs through the book of Revelation, ‘Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches’ (Rev. 2:7), and with the understanding and experience it here references of Receptive Ecumenism as a movement of the Spirit. The focus then turns to Receptive Ecumenism as at once a transforming of contemporary ecumenism, a further encouraging of the intrinsically transformative potential and effects of ecumenism, and as an event and instrument of ecclesial transformation. Following that are some reflections on differing ways of understanding ecclesial conversion, the continuing place of traditioned identities and difference, and the kind of full communion in redeemed diversity that is envisaged. Finally, having pointed to some examples of Receptive Ecumenism in practice, the chapter closes by noting the strong resonance between current Catholic explorations of more synodal ways of being and the orientation, practice, and potential of Receptive Ecumenism. Is this the moment when receptive ecumenical learning can help serve the transformation of the Catholic Church and so help serve the ecumenical journey?
