Abstract

This chapter focuses on the changing ways in which we measure ageing in society. While it is usually agreed that State-enforced, techniques of chronological age measurement were key to establish the cultural apparatus of the ‘modern’ life course, less attention has been devoted how mensuration and quantification, as cultural practices, enabled transitions towards new life course arrangements. With their orientation towards productive, healthy and active ageing, contemporary ageing self-quantification digital practices appear to be moving life course towards a form of everyday practice equipped by imprecise information and qualitative points of reference.
