This paper argues that Ruth Burrows OCD has updated the Carmelite tradition in the light of the Second Vatican Council. The first part described Burrows's understanding of Carmel and mystical theology and the context in which she began her project of aggiornamento. Part two examines her interpretation of the three Carmelite doctors of the church: St. Teresa of Jesus (of Avila), St. John of the Cross, and St. Thérèse of The Child Jesus and the Holy Face (of Lisieux) and the influence of Karl Rahner on her writings.
