Abstract

This paper investigates the working life of Anne Fisher (1719-1778), an author and educationalist who worked alongside her husband, Thomas Slack, in their printing office cum bookshop on Middle Street/Union Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Attention is focused on the question of gender, and how Fisher’s status as a married woman affected her working life. She had a long and successful career as an author of educational books, publishing under her maiden name, but her involvement in the print trade has been either forgotten or reduced to that of an ‘able assistant’ in her husband’s business. Exploring her working life both before and after her marriage helps to explain why her achievements have not always been recognised and exposes the full extent of her contribution to the print business that she and her husband established in 1763.
