'Sacred texts' are currently being discussed highly controversially in research. However, a theory of the sacred text has not yet been developed by either religious studies or literary studies. The contributions collected here address this symptomatic gap by examining readings, practices and adaptations of 'sacred texts' from which a theory of the sacred text in modernity can be developed. They look at the connections between theological and literary texts from perspectives as diverse as religious studies, theology, literary studies, cultural studies and art studies.
