Ability testing has been used in education for about a 100 years, and in some countries its use has been extensive. During that time, the concept of ability has been refined as has its measurement. Mistakes have been made and our understanding is still evolving. It remains a controversial area perhaps because of the mistaken claims about racial differences, misinterpretations about heritability, and links to dyslexia. Despite this, ability testing is still widespread and is used with whole cohorts for selection, tracking, and monitoring. It is also widely used by educational psychologists on a one-to-one basis in their clinical work.
