Abstract
This paper presents a study of the soil water retention curves of a sandy clay soil compacted at different water contents. The suction measurements were obtained using the filter paper and the psychrometer methods. For each compaction condition, the change in suction of the soil samples was measured when varying the water content from the initial “as-compacted” state via drying or wetting. The soil tested in this work is that used for the construction of an instrumented embankment built for research purposes at Nafferton farm near Newcastle (UK) as part of a cooperative project (BIONICS) aimed at investigating the biological and engineering impacts of climate change on slopes.
