Abstract
Technological change has always caused anxiety for those people whose task it is to negotiate the change between old and new media. Deprived of familiar points of reference, both publishers and users may feel disorientated when faced with new publication and distribution media. Although this chapter discusses the effects of electronic publication at the beginning of the 21st century, it is instructive to begin by looking at these kind of anxieties form a much older perspective.
