Abstract

East Asia and the Pacific are economically developed. Yet, we know very little about the research, knowledge generation, and broader interconnections of universities and colleges in this region. After becoming industrially developed, what kind of problems and issues is this region faced with academically? Who are the institutions that can inform governments, and offer policy recommendations? Are they different from other research institutions in the Western world? This article introduces 10 social science research academies from the US, Australia, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, and Korea in order to understand their role, functions, and characteristics.
