Abstract
We review some recent work on the construction of SU (N) skyrmions from rational, and more generally harmonic, maps from the two-sphere into complex projective spaces. We first describe the SU (2) case, where the rational map approximation is relatively straightforward and produces fields which are good approximations to the numerically known minimal energy skyrmions. We then discuss some possible generalizations to higher rank groups, where both the approximation and the skyrmions themselves are not so well understood. Finally, we describe the construction of some spherically symmetric SU(N) Skyrme fields obtained from the Veronese sequence of harmonic maps.
