This chapter discusses the impact of the Norman conquest of England in 1066 on English literary culture. It emphasizes the richness and sophistication of Anglo‐Norman literary culture after the conquest and illustrates the complexity with which Anglo‐Norman writers addressed concepts of history, nationality, and identity. The texts that it discusses include the Song of the Battle of Hastings, Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain, Lawrence of Durham's Dialogues, and the Romance of Waldef.
