Abstract
We understand human trafficking as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring, or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception of the use of power or of a position of vulnerable or of the giving or receiving of payments of having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation (Protocol to Prevent, suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons – Article 3). This paper will focus on sex trafficking in the context of the UK, because it is one of the forms of human trafficking that reflects gender, class and immigration inequalities, and globally, it is the most common form of trafficking, up to 50% of all trafficking victims are trafficked in the sex trade (Kelly & Regan, 2000). It is also a gendered phenomenon with a staggering number of women exploited in a complex sex trade internationally (Suchland, 2015, Angathangelou, Agathangelou & Ling, L. 2003). Up to 72% of girls trafficked globally are trafficked into the sex trade. Most traffickers are male. Available research also testifies to the polyvictimisation of victims/survivors of sex traffickers, where they experience simultaneously or at different times, diverse forms of violence and abuse, that includes: domestic violence, sexual abuse, forced marriage, child marriage, and homicide (Kelly & Regan, 2000).
