Abstract

A series of variable temperature A.C. magnetization measurements have been completed from 4.2 K up to T-c in magnetic fields up to 10 T on bulk PbMo6S8 (PMS). The properties of hot isostatically pressed (HIP'ed) PMS fabricated at a pressure of 2x10(8) N.m(-2) (2000 bar) are compared with those of PMS fabricated at ambient pressure. After HIP'ing the PMS, the critical current density increased by more than a factor of 20 and T-c increased by 0:5 K. Using Bean's critical state model, the magnetic measurements suggest that the HIP'ed sample has a critical current density of greater than 3x10(8) A.m(-2) at 6 K. and 5 T.
