Lucinda Dirven
A Palmyrene altar in the Cincinnati Art Museum
Dirven, Lucinda; Kaizer, Ted
Abstract
This article concerns the publication of an altar from Palmyra that it is possession of the Cincinnati Art Museum. The alter is decorated, uniquely, on all four sides, with reliefs representing Palmyrene deities: a seated goddess, an armed desert deity, a solar deity, and a Poseidonfigure carrying a trident. The alter provides the first instance of the latter figure appearing on Palmyrene sculpture.
