Abstract
This volume is the first programmatic examination of the productivity of new approaches from Jewish studies and post-colonial studies for the constellation of Lessing and Mendelssohn. The consistent application of both of these perspectives to these two figures demonstrates the numerous and multi-faceted mutual influences between them while systematically reflecting of the role of their differences, thereby illuminating the paradigmatic significance of the common efforts within the epoch of European enlightenment with regard to the status of minorities in modern societies. The authors are internationally recognized leaders in their respective disciplines. The volume thus sets a new standard for the scholarly discussion of Lessing's contacts with the Jewish world.
