Assembly Places and Practices in Medieval Europe.
Abstract
This volume brings together eleven papers dealing with locational aspects of assembly sites in Britain and parts of Europe. Key themes are the adoption and use of ancient prehistoric remains, the accessibility of sites and their positioning related to settlements, cemeteries, administrative divisions and territorial boundaries. The pre-christian cultic aspect of early assembly sites and apparent duality of kingship and cult are also explored in relation to Britain and Scandinavia.
