Abstract
An investigation of the traditional patterns of cross-gender encounter between figures representing This World and the Other in Old Norse - Icelandic literature, and in more recent Scandinavian and British folktale and ballad, demonstrating that each typical pattern is generally associated with a particular pre-Christian Norse god.
