Biography Matthieu earned his B.Sc. (Honors) in Chemistry from Heriot-Watt University in 2004. He went on to obtain an M.Sc. in the synthesis, structure, and reactivity of biomolecules from Université de Montpellier 2 in 2005, followed by a specialized Master's in Fine Organic Chemistry from École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier in 2006, working on the synthesis of oxazaphosphinanes. During his industrial internship at Lonza AG in Switzerland, he worked on the development of pseudo-prolines. Matthieu completed his Ph.D. in 2010 as part of the European POC4Life project under Dr. Loïc Charbonnière, focusing on the synthesis, photophysical properties, and biological labelling of luminescent lanthanide complexes.

In 2010, Matthieu joined Pr. William Skene's group at Université de Montréal, where he worked on dynamic polymers. He then spent a year as a teaching fellow at Université d’Angers (2011-2012) before joining Dr. Pascale Delangle's group at the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies renouvelables in Grenoble (2012-2014). There, he researched the synthesis of cyclodecapeptides as chelating agents for actinides.

From 2014 to 2020, Matthieu worked in Pr. David Parker FRS's group at Durham University, focusing on the synthesis and study of europium complexes for cell imaging, circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy, and multi-photon excitation CPL microscopy. His work also involved preparing CPL calibration standards, developing probes, and synthesising gadolinium complexes for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy.

In 2021, Matthieu joined Dr. Clare Mahon's group as a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) associate, a collaborative role between Durham University and Procter & Gamble in Newcastle (Dr. Gang Si), where he focused on polyester synthesis.
