Simple, practical suggestions for teaching and assessing international students from a conversation between two time-served accounting academics

Abstract

With increased global mobility and migration, coupled with financial imperatives, our student cohorts are becoming increasingly international. Viewed positively, international students bring different knowledge, viewpoints, and life experiences, thereby increasing the diversity of our classrooms, potentially enriching the experience for home students by helping to develop intercultural communication and understandings. Yet international students, and we as tutors, face several difficulties in getting the best out of their presence and participation in our classrooms. Here, drawing on a conversation with an experienced colleague, I look to highlight some of the perceived issues whilst offering simple practical suggested actions.
