An overview of progress in the design and development of the Advisor subsystem during the first two years of the MASCOT Design Support Environment project is given. The Advisor is a software tool which makes use of a set of design metrics in applying knowledge-based techniques to the task of assessing a design, where the design is expressed using the MASCOT design representation. The experimental basis of this work is described, and the principles upon which the Advisor is based are outlined. © 1988.
