Abstract

Transport critical current measurements have been made on bulk PbMo6S8 (PMS) samples from 5 K up to T-c in magnetic fields up to 12 T. The properties of hot isostatically pressed (HIP'ed) PMS fabricated at 1.3x10(8) N.m(-2)(1300 bar) are compared with those of PMS fabricated at ambient pressure. We have found that HIP'ing PMS increases the transport critical current density by approximate to 17. The volume pinning force (F-P) of both samples has the same functional form F-p=alpha(B*(C2))(n)(T)b(1-b) where b=B/B*(C2) and n=1.6 +/- 0.06 and 1.67 +/- 0.06 and alpha is 6.0x10(5) Am-2T0.6 and 0.9x10(5)Am(-2)T(0.67) for the HIP'ed and unHIP'ed sample respectively. B*(C2) for the HIP'ed sample lies close to the irreversibility line derived from complementary magnetic measurements. Our results demonstrate that the critical current density of HIP'ed PbMo6S8 in high magnetic fields is sufficiently large that this material is a potential candidate for the next generation of high field applications operating in magnetic fields up above 25 Tesla.
