Abstract

Proceedings of the Ravenna Workshop held in September this year to honour the memory of Professor Lindsey Hughes. There was no attempt to include at least one paper on each reign but the papers presented resulted in a pleasing symmetry: six papers from the reign of Peter I and seven from Catherine II’s, but one each from those of Peter II, Peter III and Alexander I, and three from the important reign of Elizabeth. Birthdays, betrothals, funerals, coronations, but also founding of cities, churches, and secular institutions, premières of plays and publication events, as well as more muted and seemingly insignificant occurrences and incidents provided the starting points for fascinating investigations in which the different approaches of the speakers only added to the variety and vitality evident at the Workshop, Some papers stay more or less within the confines of their ‘day’, others use contemporary records and eye-witness accounts to give an initial context for their ‘event’, yet others, seek the significance of their day in later repercussions and developments. We can only believe that Lindsey would have found both the papers and the ensuing discussions stimulating and lively and would have fully contributed, as was her wont. The Proceedings of the Workshop are offered as a lasting tribute to her work and her memory.
