Ionic Liquids Batteries
Abbas, Qaisar; Hunt, Michael R.C.
Abstract
Recent progress on new and state of the art electrolytes, active materials and their applications in various configurations has resulted in enormous progress in the field of electrochemical energy storage in general and in the area of rechargeable batteries in particular. However, the focus is now turning towards safety, stability and environmental impact along with improving the energy storage capability while maintaining high power density of electrochemical energy storage systems. In this article, we discuss fundamentals of ionic liquids including their physiochemical/electrochemical properties and their applications in electrochemistry in general and rechargeable batteries in particular. By using the fundamental understanding of ionic liquids, we suggest the outlook and research direction of ionic liquid based rechargeable batteries for the near future.
