Abstract

Our understanding of the relationship between archaeology and Homer is fundamentally shaped by the work of the late Manfred Korfmann. Korfmann electrified the general public and polarised scholarly opinion in equal measure, especially in his native Germany. He started digging at Hisarlık in 1988, and exhibited his findings before a wider public in 2001/02.¹ There have been heated debates about his achievements ever since.
