Abstract

In this chapter we explore the use of autoethnography as a research strategy in social sciences, and in organisation studies more specifically. Using examples from a range of scholars, including ourselves, we highlight the ideas and methodological debates surrounding autoethnographic research and its evolution from anthropological studies. In discussing the range of work that has attracted the label of ‘autoethnography’ we hope to illustrate the potential value of the approach to organizational researchers. By making this chapter autoethnographic in itself we have tried to share our own personal experiences of writing evocative and analytic research narratives for publication. Using what we have called ‘autoethnographic vignettes’ we also aim to encourage researchers, especially practitioners, to explore, evoke and analyse their own involvement in organizational life. Finally we provide some ideas and practical advice for scholars who wish to have their autoethnographic work published in mainstream journals.
