Abstract

This is the second of a pair of articles presenting a series of chemical demonstrations designed to help develop pupils' understanding of the notion 'chemical reaction', which distinguishes chemistry from other sciences. The previous article introduced experiments that led from the origins of othe chemical elements to how these are reordered and conserved in a vast range of chemical reactions. In this one, four further sets of demonstrations are presented to show how chemists seek to control chemical reactions to produce everyday products. Illustgrations designed to help illuminate and engage an audience are included. Together, the two articles provide strategies for introducing pupils to the most fundamental chemical ideas in a lively and informative way.
