De la dispute utopienne à la controverse religieuse: deux querelles signées Thomas More

Abstract

It is often assumed that a literary quarrel is constituted by a cluster of texts and takes place between those texts. But a quarrel can also take place within a single text. The utopian tradition is striking in this respect, for some of its major texts are implicated in quarrels of both kinds, inter-textual and intra-textual. Thomas More’s Utopia (1516), the case study offered here, is a text that both takes the form of a quarrel and becomes entangled in a major inter-textual quarrel during the author’s lifetime. This article examines what form both of these quarrels take and what kind of light each casts on the other.
