Abstract

The article demonstrates the influence of Sidney's Defence of Poesy on Matthew Gwinne's 1582 Oration in Praise of Music, making it the earliest known evidence for Sidney's essay, with important implications for its dating, its relation to Stephen Gosson's School of Abuse, and its early circulation and influence. In addition, the article argues that further research is needed on the relations between these and other contributions to the polemic initiated by Gosson's School, and on the polemical element in the period's literary and aesthetic thought more broadly.
