This contribution examines the recasting to which the Crónica de 1344 subjected the account of the Estoria de España. The study of the Chronicle reveals the application of hypertextual strategies and techniques detectable in its two main sources, the Version sanchina and the Crónica de Castilla, and suggests that Pedro de Barcelos undertook a detailed study of these two works before proceeding to write his own. My remarks will be confined to the section of the chronicle devoted to Fernán González, a character who, by his dual status as a rebel against royal power and an ancestor of the kings of Castile and Portugal, embodies the ideal of an aristocratic pan-Iberianism that informs Pedro de Barceos’ thought. The analysis of the section will emphasise the concordance of the innovations contained in it with the general plan of the work designed by its author.
