Abstract
This paper presents a modified d-q model that includes the complex inductance characteristics present in single tooth wound synchronous reluctance motors. Utilization of the single tooth coils results in high air gap harmonic content and has consequences for machines design, performance and operation but has been shown previously to be competitive for high efficiency drives. Conventional d-q theory as applied to distributed wound synchronous reluctance motors is revised accordingly to overcome the identified difficulties - the inductance characteristics are explored and new representations developed for the axis equivalent circuits. A new model is derived and parameter population is explored. Attention to expanding the model to include new electromagnetic torque expressions incorporating the complex inductance characteristics is presented and the proposed model is validated through finite element studies.
