Abstract

This collection of critical essays (and one long poem by George Szirtes) situates Sebald’s work within the context of European literary history and contemporary cultural theory. A variety of perspectives are adopted, including ecocriticism (Colin Riordan on After Nature), trauma theory (Carolin Duttlinger on Austerlitz) and psychoanalysis (Wilfried Wilms on On the Natural History of Destruction). These beautifully-written essays persistently direct the reader back to the texts themselves, armed with new information, insights and admiration.
