Abstract
The contributors to this interdisciplinary volume (the proceedings of the 1994 Durham Biennial Symposia devoted to European issues) discuss the contemporary relevance and transformations of ancient myth, posing the question whether the post-Enlightenment utilisation of myth may not be a compensation for the loss of the Christian mythological framework in the increasingly secularised modern era.
