Acceleration waves in a nonlinear Biot theory of porous media (2018)
Journal Article
Ciarletta, M., Straughan, B., & Tibullo, V. (2018). Acceleration waves in a nonlinear Biot theory of porous media. International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, 103, 23-26. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijnonlinmec.2018.04.005

We extend a theory of Biot to be applicable to nonlinear deformations of an elastic body which contains pores saturated by a fluid. A detailed acceleration wave analysis is presented for the full nonlinear theory.

Tridispersive thermal convection (2018)
Journal Article
Gentile, M., & Straughan, B. (2018). Tridispersive thermal convection. Nonlinear Analysis: Real World Applications, 42, 378-386. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nonrwa.2018.01.009

We derive the linear instability and nonlinear stability thresholds for a problem of thermal convection in a tridispersive porous medium with a single temperature. Importantly we demonstrate that the nonlinear stability threshold is the same as the l... Read More about Tridispersive thermal convection.

Continuous dependence on modelling for temperature-dependent bidispersive flow (2017)
Journal Article
Franchi, F., Nibbi, R., & Straughan, B. (2017). Continuous dependence on modelling for temperature-dependent bidispersive flow. Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 473(2208), Article 20170485. https://doi.org/10.1098/rspa.2017.0485

We consider a model for flow in a porous medium which has a double porosity structure. There is the usual porosity herein called macro porosity, but in addition, we allow for a porosity due to cracks or fissures in the solid skeleton. The cracks give... Bidispersive vertical convection (2017)
Journal Article
Gentile, M., & Straughan, B. (2017). Bidispersive vertical convection. Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 473(2207), Article 20170481. https://doi.org/10.1098/rspa.2017.0481

A bidispersive porous material is one which has usual pores but additionally contains a system of micro pores. We consider a fluid-saturated bidispersive porous medium in the vertical layer x ∈ (−1/2, 1/2) with gravity in the −z (downward) direction.... Read More about Bidispersive vertical convection.

Modelling Bidispersive Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium Flow (2017)
Journal Article
Franchi, F., Nibbi, R., & Straughan, B. (2017). Modelling Bidispersive Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium Flow. Fluids, 2(3), Article 48. https://doi.org/10.3390/fluids2030048

In this work, we present a system of equations which describes non-isothermal flow in a bidispersive porous medium under conditions of local thermal non-equilibrium. The porous medium consists of macro pores, and in the solid skeleton are cracks or f... Read More about Modelling Bidispersive Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium Flow.

Bidispersive thermal convection (2017)
Journal Article
Gentile, M., & Straughan, B. (2017). Bidispersive thermal convection. International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 114, 837-840. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijheatmasstransfer.2017.06.095

We obtain the linear instability and nonlinear stability thresholds for a problem of thermal convection in a bidispersive porous medium with a single temperature. It is important to note that we show that the linear instability threshold is the same... Read More about Bidispersive thermal convection.

Modelling drinking with information (2017)
Journal Article
Giacobbe, A., Mulone, G., Straughan, B., & Wang, W. (2017). Modelling drinking with information. Mathematical Methods in the Applied Sciences, 40(12), 4400-4411. https://doi.org/10.1002/mma.4312

In this article, we propose a mathematical model that describes the dynamics of a population divided into susceptible drinkers, moderate drinkers, and heavy drinkers subject to an external influence. The external influence is modelled using a supplem... Read More about Modelling drinking with information.

Exchange of stability in Cattaneo–LTNE porous convection (2015)
Journal Article
Straughan, B. (2015). Exchange of stability in Cattaneo–LTNE porous convection. International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 89, 792-798. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijheatmasstransfer.2015.05.084

We investigate a problem of convection in local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) porous media. This is where the solid skeleton and the fluid may have different temperatures. However, due to increasing interest in thermal wave motion, especially at mic... Read More about Exchange of stability in Cattaneo–LTNE porous convection.

Some Remarks on Functional Analysis (2014)
Book Chapter
Blowey, J. F., & Straughan, B. (2014). Some Remarks on Functional Analysis. In R. B. Hetnarski (Ed.), Encyclopedia of Thermal Stresses. Springer Verlag. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-94-007-2739-7_24

Functional analysis is a key tool in the study of partial differential equations which helps to answer key questions such as existence, well-posedness, and the class in which a solution should belong. We begin these remarks by introducing normed spac... Read More about Some Remarks on Functional Analysis.
