Ellipsoidal plasma mirror focusing of high power laser pulses to ultra-high intensities (2016)
Journal Article
Wilson, R., King, M., Gray, R., Carroll, D., Dance, R., Armstrong, C., …McKenna, P. (2016). Ellipsoidal plasma mirror focusing of high power laser pulses to ultra-high intensities. Physics of Plasmas, 23(3), Article 033106. https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4943200

The design and development of an ellipsoidal F/1 focusing plasmamirror capable of increasing the peak intensity achievable on petawatt level laser systems to is presented. A factor of 2.5 reduction in the focal spot size is achieved when compared to... Read More about Ellipsoidal plasma mirror focusing of high power laser pulses to ultra-high intensities.

Progress towards building pixelated transformation-optics devices (2015)
Presentation / Conference Contribution
Cowie, E., Bourgenot, C., Robertson, D. J., & Courtial, J. K. (2015, December). Progress towards building pixelated transformation-optics devices. Presented at Frontiers in Optics 2015, San Jose, California

We report progress in the design and manufacture of micro-structured surfaces that change the direction of transmitted light rays. Such pixellated generalised refraction is general enough to design pixellated transformation-optics devices.

Efficient measurement of an optical orbital-angular-momentum spectrum comprising more than 50 states (2013)
Journal Article
Lavery, M., Robertson, D., Sponselli, A., Courtial, J., Steinhoff, N., Tyler, G., …Padgett, M. (2013). Efficient measurement of an optical orbital-angular-momentum spectrum comprising more than 50 states. New Journal of Physics, 15(1), Article 013024. https://doi.org/10.1088/1367-2630/15/1/013024

A light beam may be separated into its orbital-angular momentum (OAM) components by a geometric optical transformation that converts each OAM component into a plane wave with a transverse phase gradient. Subsequent focusing produces a spot the latera... Read More about Efficient measurement of an optical orbital-angular-momentum spectrum comprising more than 50 states.

Refractive elements for the measurement of the orbital angular momentum of a single photon (2012)
Journal Article
Lavery, M. P., Robertson, D. J., Berkhout, G. C., Love, G. D., Padgett, M. J., & Courtial, J. (2012). Refractive elements for the measurement of the orbital angular momentum of a single photon. Optics Express, 20(3), 2110-2115. https://doi.org/10.1364/oe.20.002110

We have developed a mode transformer comprising two custom refractive optical elements which convert orbital angular momentum states into transverse momentum states. This transformation allows for an efficient measurement of the orbital angular momen... Read More about Refractive elements for the measurement of the orbital angular momentum of a single photon.

New techniques for integral field spectroscopy - I. Design, construction and testing of the GNIRS IFU (2006)
Journal Article
Allington-Smith, J., Content, R., Dubbeldam, C., Robertson, D., & Preuss, W. (2006). New techniques for integral field spectroscopy - I. Design, construction and testing of the GNIRS IFU. Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 371(1), 380-394. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2966.2006.10666.x

We describe the integral field spectroscopy (IFS) capability of the Gemini Near-infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS) installed on the Gemini-South telescope. This makes use of the Advanced Image Slicer (AIS) optical concept of Content. Image slicing is, in... Read More about New techniques for integral field spectroscopy - I. Cryogenic tests of volume-phase holographic gratings: results at 100 K. (2006)
Journal Article
Tamura, N., Murray, G., Luke, P., Blackburn, C., Robertson, D., Dipper, N., …Allington-Smith, J. (2006). Cryogenic tests of volume-phase holographic gratings: results at 100 K. Applied optics, 45(23), 5923-5928. https://doi.org/10.1364/ao.45.005923

We present results from cryogenic tests of volume-phase holographic (VPH) gratings at ∼100  K∼100  K. The aims of these tests are to see whether the diffraction efficiency as a function of wavelength is significantly different at a low temperature fr...
