This chapter begins with a critique of corporate social responsibility both as, in my view, a necessary corrective to the current debate, and as a means of justifying the need for an alternative approach. The chapter then sets out just such an alternative approach under the general heading of corporate character, noting the feasibility of the concept as a metaphor, and setting out the key elements of a virtue ethics approach to business ethics. The concept of corporate character is then developed more fully, including a taxonomy of corporate virtues, and how corporate character may be developed. Potential drawbacks of this approach are considered before concluding.
