Abstract
= As it is well known, King Alfonso X (1252-1284) ordered the composition of two versions, Primitiva (c. 1270-1271) and Crítica (c. 1282-1284), of his Estoria de España, neither of which were finished during his lifetime. Focusing on the final section of the Estoria (the narrative of the Castilian kings from Alfonso VII onwards), the topic raised here is the degree of completion reached by the two Alphonsine versions and their genetic relationship with the ‘general chronicles’ which were compiled after the king’s death. A more accurate understanding of the debt the post-Alphonsine chronicles have with the original Estoria de España seems a necessary step in order to reach a fairer assessment of the ideological and aesthetical significance of the the variants each chronicle introduces with respect to the Alphonsine model, and thus enhance our knowledge of the somewhat obscure period of the history of Castilian historiography running between Alfonso X and Fernán Sánchez de Valladolid.
