Abstract
The excavation, analysis, conservation and restitution of human remains from archaeological sites entail ethical challenges that archeology and heritage professionals must be aware of. However, in publications, these are usually ignored. This paper examines the ethical approval required in publications on human remains in fourteen journals from Argentina and Chile. Fourteen journals that accept bioarchaeological research papers were examined. Of the 119 bioarchaeology papers published between January 2016 and September 2021, only two (1.7%) acknowledged having followed ethical guidelines. None of the articles made reference to ethical approval to carry out the research. While ethics committees may not exist at some universities or conservation institutions, Journal editors have an increasing responsibility to ensure that research on archaeological human remains is conducted ethically. In light of the results of this study, ways in which authors can address this issue and how publishers can also reinforce ethical requirements in publications are recommended.
