Roma en México / México en Roma: Las academias de arte entre Europa y el Nuevo Mundo 1843-1867

Abstract

This is the illustrate catalogue (over 400 images in colour) of the exhibition Rome in Mexico / Mexico in Rome: The Academies of Fine Arts between Europe and the New World (Mexico City, Museo Nacional de San Carlos, December 6 2018 to April 28 2019). The exhibition was organised under the aegis of Durham University’s Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art (ZC), the MNSC, the Mexican Ministry of Culture (Secretaría de Cultura), the Mexican Institute of Fine Arts (Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes), the Italian Cultural Institute in Mexico City (Istituto Italiano di Cultura) and the Academy of Saint Luke in Rome (Accademia di San Luca), and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the MNSC. It features 7 essays and a detailed catalogue of 100 artworks (paintings, drawings, sculptures, and applied arts), some of which were never exhibited and the vast majority of them never exhibited together. The exhibition was divided into 8 sections (1. The Factory of Prestige; 2. Travelling Artworks; 3. Dramatis Personae; 4. The Ancient Virtues; 5. The People of Rome; 6. The School of Landscape; 7. The Internationale of Sacred Art; 8. The Spectacle of History), distributed in 6 of the main exhibition rooms of MNSC. Pieces on loan come from 8 different museums and 4 private collections in Mexico and other countries in Latin America; they have never been displayed together, and some are exhibited here for the very first time with new attributions.
